About this Blog

My name is René Grothmann. I am an advanced Bridge player from Germany. 55 years ago, I started to learn the game with the help of some excellent players. We played Acol at that time, and later Precision. Unfortunately, I gave the game up later, mostly due to missing partners when I came back from the US. I think I had a 40 year hiatus and restarted a few years ago.

The bridge landscape had changed a lot in the meantime. There were now lots of opportunities to play in the net. These servers can not only be used to practice, but also to study, if you take it seriously. My favorite at the moment is IntoBridge with its ladder and the daily challenge against an expert. The chance to play against top players and learn from then is most welcome.

I do not think that the Bridge federations, especially the German one, exploits the online resources fully. I see them trying. But so far, there seems to be only little success and the clubs continue dying. I believe that some old manners stand in the way. E.g., access to a commonly used bidding system needs to be free, including the material to learn and study at home. There should be frequent online and offline meetings points for young players. Financing is a problem, of course. But I believe that there are lots of members willing to help for free. And if there enough young players, sponsors will follow.

This blog is about the mistakes I make or see. It servers my own education and I hope that it is valuable for others too.
