The LAW
I am still not sure about what happened in this hand. Lia told me that it would have passed instead of bidding 2♠. The bidding ends in 4♥ by West in this case which can be made. Almost all other tables did that and E/W made their game. On my table, Lia managed to go down three in 6♥X for a difference of 920. This would be a substantial swing.
My bid of 2♠ is simply by length. We have 8 cards in our suit, so I bid 2. If I wanted to invite to game, I'd cuebid. The Lia on North seemed to be inspired by my trump support and imagined a slam. That explains the cuebid in 4♥. I was not sure that 5♥ make, although I have a probable trump trick. So, I passed. The double by North seemed so dubious that I opted to defend in 5♠ now which is a bit lacking consequence. The final decision to go to slam West is simply crazy.
These hands are always difficult to bid. Probably, the LAW gives the most reliable guidance. If you have the minority of points, honors in your suit and vulnerability is not unfavorable, bid to the number of trumps you have. We have 10. And indeed, 4♠ is still a good defense over 4♥. To judge weather or not to stretch the LAW one more or double is tough. As a guideline, avoid the 5-level.
