Preemptive Bidding and the Greed

It is hard for me to judge the long time value of 3-level openings with 6 cards. I'd guess it is negative in the minors because you cannot block the opponents effectively. The only point speaking for this preemptive excess is that you make it more difficult to decide for a game in the majors. But what is the effect? Your opponents are thrown into a guesswork, yes. But that can easily backfire to you if they guess luckily.

In this hand, I saw no reason to go for the game after a double in third hand by Lia. After all, this can also be just a revival try. But I was alone with this decision. Almost everyone, including the robot, opted for 4♠, going down doubled 5 times for -1400. My -1100 are a lot too, but in pairs are a win. This raises the question if North should double at all with the doomed values in diamonds, the two club losers, and only three spades. Against such a N/S pair, the 3 opening shines, especially in team. In pairs, it prevents 2NT or 2♣ played from North.

This is another hand where I am unsure about the opening. You should not open 2 really. The hand is too good. Nevertheless, most players did. Most of the time, East doubled and West went to 2♠, down 1. On the other hand, 3 make if you guess the clubs correctly. Again, opening 2 makes the decision tough for E/W. As it stands, it is a bad decision.
