Opening 1NT instead of 1 in a Major
This is from the "Daily Celebrity Challenge" on IntoBridge. The master was Stefan Skorchev. Like everybody these days and the whole competition, he opened this hand 1NT which the robot passed, 1NT making with no overtricks.
I am increasingly unsatisfied with the fashion to use every excuse to open 1NT. Too often, a fit in the 5-card major is missed, and the controls in one of the suits are insufficient. Moreover, a good 3NT contract is reached almost every time even when opening the major instead of 1NT. Todays aggressive overcalls over 1NT are often elaborated systems to the point where opening 1♥ might work better to block the opponents, opening spades even more so.
In this hand, you can always make 4♥ after a ♦ lead, and even an overtrick if you guess ♣ correctly. Just take the lead with the ♦Q, draw trumps, and observe the ♦10 falling under the king. The robots will open spades after getting in, but it is too late.
